The town of Carterville located in Williamson County and has a population of approximately 4,600. The town borders the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, Illinois first designated wilderness area. The Refuge is a sanctuary for wildlife and a wintering area for Canadian geese, giving local residents many great hunting and fishing opportunities. Crab Orchard Lake covers 6,985 acres and is popular for boating, swimming and camping.
Carterville has experienced quite a bit of growth over the last several years. One report indicates a 12% increase in the cities population since the 2000 census. Evidence of this can be seen in the Carterville real estate market, where several newly constructed subdivisions have popped up. There are also signs of economic growth, as well. A new mini-mall has opened on Route 13 that offers an Italian restaurant, a specialty coffee shop and several stores.
Carterville Lions & FairM
The Carterville Lions have sponsored the Carterville Free Fair for over 90 years and it is held at Canon Park the first week in September. The event features carnival rides, entertainment, food and games, such as dollars in the straw, horseshoes, washers and kiddie car races, in a small town atmosphere. Canon Park is also home to a new skateboard park and there are competitions held here also.
The Carterville School District is made up of the Tri-C Elementary school (grades K through 4), the Carterville Intermediate School (grades 5 through 8) and the Carterville High School. Tri-C is a brand new school and the name refers to the three communities that comprise the district: Cambria, Crainville and Carterville. In general, the school system is highly thought of and often a contributing factor to a families choice in area real estate.
Carterville is also home to John A. Logan College, a community 2 year college with an enrollment of over 7,000. The college has had many accolades and is partnered with Southern Illinois University to help students achieve their educational needs and make the transition between the two colleges easily. Southern Illinois University is less than 10 miles from Carterville.
