Located on the edge of the Shawnee National Forest and the entry to picturesque Giant City State Park, Makanda offers a relaxed alternative to many of the area’s busier communities. The community and its surrounding area offers an extensive range of homes in all categories. Annual village-wide festivals add to the appeal and charm of Makanda, plus its proximity to the “great outdoors,” many of Southern Illinois’ fine wineries and the attractions of larger communities, make Makanda a great place to call home.
The one-of-a-kind Makanda boardwark is home to a number of local artisans, craftspeople and vendors who offer their works in quaint storefronts.
The town centers itself around the "boardwalk", a historic block of storefronts built in the late 1800´s. The boardwalk offers an eclectic group of stores with a variety or wares. It´s a great stop on the way to Giant City to get a homemade ice cream cone or cappuccino and then browse the various stores offering locally produced jewelry, candles, weavings and other items from local artists.
